Holland 2014: Day 18-19

Category: Travels

The last couple of days of our vacation are usually the days which we don’t fuss too much about, preferring to reserve the day for packing, and perhaps the imminent last minute shopping or errands.

I had a little quality time with my lovely mom-in-law over coffee on one morning and the kids had fantastic bonding time playing with their Oma & Opa thereafter in the afternoon. It was also very endearing to watch my daughter having a little one-on-one session with her Oma over ducks in the garden of their backyard.

We ended our last night at Mama’s Hotel with a barbecue session followed by lots more quality time and story-telling before heading up to bed at almost 2 am.

The day we were due to leave for the airport was probably the very first time we were able to sleep in till 10.30 am in the morning as even though the kids woke up way too early, we had their grandparents baby-sitting them for a while as we continued our much needed snooze; a luxury which we hadn’t and could not have in such a long, long while!

Although imminent, it was almost a shame to be going back home to Bangkok, especially since Spud’s Dutch has certainly improved by leaps and bounds whilst we were there. She even picked up a little bit of a Dutch accent when she speaks English. Hilarious! In fact, even Spud spoke up about her preference of staying at her Oma’s & Opa’s home. Funny that as I would have thought that she would want to go home.

Thinking back, we did not have too much of a trouble in the plane with the kids even though it was delayed for almost 2 hours. In fact, the kids even managed to sleep for a good 4-5 hours, sleeping flat out on the seats head-to-head adjacent to each other. A few good hours of bliss and I managed to finish watching one whole (long) movie!

Whilst they were not on their best behavior during their waking hours, Spud & Squirt certainly did better than 15 of the fellow British passengers who were seated close to us. They behaved like your typical British football hooligans – loud, crass and completely misbehaving. In fact, one of them were apparently so drunk that he was asked to leave the plane before take-off. Mid-air, they announced that they were not going to serve any more alcohol to anyone because those bunch of rowdy boys had way too much to drink and passengers around them were complaining about their terrible behavior.

Those that were seated next to us were pretty disruptive; they were talking over each other, sometimes over me almost all of the time, calling out to each other who were sitting in a different aisle, loudly too! and almost waking up the kids who were having their much needed shut-eye.  At one point, they were passing food and utensils right between the gap I had between my back and the back-rest! WTF. Falling short of cussing them right in front of my ids, I gave them a deadly stare and rolled my eyes to the back of my head.   I must say that that was one of the most annoying flight experiences I have ever had in my entire life! What a flight.

After more than 11 hour journey from the time we got into the car to get to the airport, we finally arrived home exhausted, but safe and unscathed.

Holland 2014 : Day 17 in Harlem

Category: Travels

With only a few days left before we head back for Bangkok, we had the rare opportunity to take another day off for ourselves and leave the kids with their grandparents. Having been almost truly bored with Amsterdam, it was recommended that we gave Harlem a shot.

We did just that.

Harlem is a nice city. Its city center is relatively smaller than Amsterdam and on a working weekday, the crowd was not as insane as one would have encountered in Amsterdam. One thing that amazed me to no end was the sheer number of shoe stores available as every other store happens to be a….well, shoe store!

The problem was I wasn’t in need of any shoes at that point in time and so resisted in going into every shoe shops there was. I probably walked into 3 and left it at that. The good thing was, now I know where to go if I ever need an urgent pair of shoes when I’m back in Holland!

Harlem’s a pretty neat little town, though. It has got some character in there, with some quirky architecture to boot.

We saw a couple of Indonesian Restaurants in the area and decided to give one of them a go for dinner. At 24 Euros per head, if we were compare to the prices we could be getting in Indonesia, the rijstafel we ordered seemed almost extravagant just for two. The consolation was that the restaurant we went to in Harlem did serve a rather decent tasting set of dishes, and I would not think twice about going back there next time (if ever).

The two of us had a rather heavy day in Harlem, and I thought that it was almost pretty ironic that we caught a faint, but full band of rainbows while we were on the train bound for home. It was a pretty sight, as if to reassure us mere mortals that there could be a rainbow after the rain.

Rainbow after the rain!

If you do have a day to spare whilst in Holland, I’d say Harlem is a place worth visiting for a quick day-shopping trip. It’s like a mini-Amsterdam with half the crowd, twice as relaxing and 10x as many shoes!

Here’s our one and last selfie of the trip to remind us of our exceptionally memorable time in homey Harlem.

Holland 2014 : Day 13 – 16

Category: Travels

We have actually scheduled our vacation this time to coincide with the wedding of Silver Bullet’s good friend back in Holland which was held in a small church. It was my very first Dutch wedding with the entire ceremony being conducted in nothing but Dutch. Needless to say, I haven’t a clue as to what were said and recited throughout the entire wedding!

The whole wedding was simple with a nice, cosy atmosphere attached it. Given the location of where the party was held, we had to book a hotel for the night – which not only had we actually placed our kids in the hands of our parents who had willingly put them to bed and take care of the when they woke up in the morning, but also essentially marked our very first night away from the kids in 4 years. Huge. (Both kids did not ask for us when we were away, but they were visibly pleased to see us again the next day when we got home and so much so that they could not resist a little bit more of a temper tantrum later in the evening.)

I had not taken any pictures from the event, but we did receive a thank you card from the newly-weds yesterday in our mailbox with some snapshots from the night. For some of us there at the wedding, it was certainly a night of reflection, and a night to remember.

We spent the next couple of days with the kids and decided to take them to Artis Zoo located right-smack in Amsterdam. It’s a small zoo, but enough to keep us and the kids occupied for a good part of the day. For sure the kids had fun! In fact, they were more than over-joyed with the opportunity to take long train rides and experience the tram rides into the city of Amsterdam.

It really is nice to be kids; no obligations whatsoever and the world is their oyster. They get to indulge in the great world of no -responsibility and their only duty is to play, play, play, (throw temper tantrums) and play and (throw temper tantrums) and play again! As parents on vacations, we can only indulge them further and making sure that they have a ball of a time when they spend their days with us.
