Monthly Mystery Munchies #12: Going South African with Bobotie

Believe it or not, this 12th edition marks our first anniversary of Monthly Mystery Munchies since Gen and I buddied-up post Blogging 201 a year ago on May, 1st 2015. We started off with Mexican as our inaugural theme – Gen made Chilli Corn Carne and I made Real Cheesy Cottage Cheese Enchilada for our very first challenge.

MMM #1: My Cheesy Enchilada

This is no April Fool’s joke. We have come a long way away since then and between the both of us who are by no means professional chefs, we brewed up more than 24 recipes which we have managed to consistently feature on every first Friday of the month based on an agreed theme. We take turns to come up with the monthly challenge.

The twist to this is that neither of us knows what the other person would be dishing up based on the theme chosen by the other person. We then post our recipes roughly at the same time. So far, we have not coincidentally made the same dish.

One year! What a milestone and through these months, I am so very honoured to have found a blogging friend who is not only creative with her cooking but an extremely talented cook. Gen pushes the envelope when it comes to creative cooking.

In looking back, I am beyond amazed at what we both have accomplished despite her being in South Africa and me, in Bangkok Thailand. In Gen, I have found a fabulous friend and in the world of blogging, there are no borders to friendship. Thank you, Gen, and here’s a very happy first anniversary to us!

I take no credit for this month’s theme of making each other’s country of origin dish as it was actually suggested by Silver Bullet. When I posed the challenge to Gen, I almost fell off my chair when she told me that her husband has also suggested the same barely 2 days before she got my email. How crazy freaky is that?!

So, in honour of our 1st anniversary of Monthly Mystery Challenge #12, we agreed that I will make a dish from South Africa and Gen a dish from Singapore. That agreed, here’s the surprising fact from my end: Silver Bullet decided that he would make an attempt on an authentic South African cuisine called Bobotie inspired from Yummly. (Sorry, Gen. Don’t kill me! This was Silver Bullet’s and his alone.)

Epicurious stated that the Bobotie is a Cape-Malay creation which is spiced up with coriander, cumin and cloves. Bobotie was even selected for an international recipe book published by the United Nations Organisation back in 1951. That is pretty special!

Without further ado, let me present Silver Bullet’s creation:

He made only one modification of not using chutney; only because we were not able to find it here. Instead, he experimented with a bunch of ingredients to make chutney from scratch. Otherwise, he killed it and did not miss out on the yellow rice or raisin. My verdict: This is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Ingredients
  1. 3-4 tbsp olive oil
  2. 3 onions chopped
  3. 2 tspn pressed garlic
  4. 1 kg ground beef
  5. 4 teaspoons curry powder
  6. 1 tspn turmeric powder
  7. Salt & pepper to taste
  8. 2 tbsp lemon juice
  9. 1 small jar of apricot jam
  10. ½ cup of chutney (we did not use this and substituted it with a small jar of lime jam, 1-2 cm of chopped ginger, 1 tspn vinegar and 1 piece dried chilli, some brown sugar and 1/2 tspn of powdered cinnamon, nutmeg and salt)
  11. 2 tbsp brown sugar
  12. 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  13. 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
  14. 2 slices of white bread, soaked in milk
  15. 4 eggs
  16. 500 ml low fat milk
  17. salt and black pepper
  18. 3 bay leaves
Instructions
  1. Pre-heat oven
  2. Heat up olive oil in a pan and saute garlic and onion
  3. Brown the beef. Add some water to help with the browning (about 10 minutes).
  4. In a separate bowl, soak the white bread with milk and set aside.
  5. In another bowl. combine curry powder, turmeric, salt, black pepper, jam, lemon juice, ingredients as the substitue for chutney, sugar, ketchup and the soaked bread . Mix until combined.
  6. Add the sauce in to the browned beef
  7. Simmer for about 30 minutes, making sure to mix it regularly.
  8. After which, transfer the cooked meat with the sauce to an oven-safe baking dish.
  9. In another bowl, combine milk, eggs and seasoning.
  10. Then pour the egg mixture over the meat and add bay leaves.
  11. In the pre-heated oven, bake for about 35 to 40 minutes till the egg has set
  12. Serve with yellow rice. Top with raisins.
Notes
  1. Use of raisins for the rice is optional. In the absence of chutney, we have used the base ingredients of making a chutney from scratch as a substitute. As this was our first time making this dish, we did not have a point of reference of how this dish was going to taste, but in our opinion, it was absolutely supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
  2. Worth a repeat! Great for parties!

By the way, do you know that supercalifragilisticexpialidocious can also be said backwards? And that’s suoicodilaipxecitsiligarfilacrepus. OK, I can’t even pronounce that and apparently Mary did say it backwards in a stage musical that opened in London (2004) and Broadway (2006). Source: Infoplease. And I only knew about this because I was trying to google for the right spelling for supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

I have been curious as to what the type of a Singaporean cuisine Gen would make. This makes me super excited! Come with me and head over to Gen’s blog to find out what she has made for Monthly Mystery Munchies #12.

———————————————————————————

Monthly Mystery Munchies features every first Friday of the month in collaboration with Gen, Author of Eat, Play, Clove. Next month will be Gen’s turn to choose a theme and it is looking like we have a few themes line-up for the next few months. Exciting times, exciting recipes to dish out. Until then! Here’s to more #MMM to come.

How We Messed with our Kids’ Head

Category: Critter Stories

In our bid to clear junk, bulky items and excess stuff from our home with our impending move, having to figure out the items we need to sell and/or being sold to whom were the main discussions in the last few weeks.

Often, the conversation happens while driving and naturally, the kids have their ears on us. Every once in a while, they interrupted our conversations with their whys.

As questions came pouring in on why we need to sell or give away our stuff, we had to explain our reasons to them in the simplest term: We can’t bring everything with us and mostly because we (or the kids) don’t have a need for them anymore.

I think they got that concept.

Spud has been particularly astute with what’s happening and she grasps the concept well: Don’t need them, sell them or give them away.

Then one afternoon, as Silver Bullet and I were discussing this very topic whilst in the car, Spud confidently chimed in:

Spud: You cannot sell us

Me: Nope.

Spud: That’s because you need us.

Simultaneously, both Silver Bullet and I, at the same time, spontaneously went: Oh? DO weeee?

A small pause followed and immediately, Spud went: WAAAAAILLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

We said that in jest, of course, but what we did not expect was the very loud wailing and sobbing that came right after that. In between hard sobs, Spud then blurted:

You are selling us? Nooooooooooo! Noooooo! Noooooooooo! I don’t want to be sold!WAAAAAIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLL. Nooo.Nooo!

It was hilarious! Too funny for us, but I guess for Spud, not so much. That got her very upset. She had real, big fat tears streaming down her cheeks.  Ooooops.

We had to try very hard to stifle our laughs. In between that,

I said, “Well…even though we don’t really need you…..”  (yeah! I know evil mama!)

Spud: WAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLL. I don’t want to be sold. WAAAAIIILLLLLLLLLLLL.

Me (in between silent giggles and trying very hard to even-up my tone seriously): We wouldn’t sell you, sweetheart! Never. Ever.

And again…

WAAAAILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

Sigh! We did not expect that she would react the way she did. Her brother, on the other hand, thought it was funny but I noticed that he did look confused.

Then with his smiles, he calmly told his sister that Mama and Papa were just kidding. And while doing so, kept making eye contact with me as if to seek for affirmation.

It took us 10 minutes to calm Spud down. We had to do a lot of cajoling that we were just teasing. It was a joint effort, Squirt included, who in his most gentle way tried to earnestly convince his sister that there was no way in hell we would sell them.

Slowly but surely, Spud calmed down. In between her calmer sobs,

Spud meekly said: Promise? You won’t sell us? Ever?

Silver Bullet & Me: Never.

I almost chimed with, “Hmmmmm…maybe. I’ll think about it!” after that. But considering that we had quite a bit more drive to do, I thought that it was enough drama for the day.

And that, my friends, was how we (unintentionally) messed with our kids’ head. My advice is that you should not be doing this while driving. The wailing was too distracting.

Otherwise, give it a shot. Just for the hell of it.

Blogger Recognition

Category: Awards

When it rains, it pours!

And when the rain comes in the form of nominations with three of them all within the same week, I am not about to complain. How can I? Award nominations are awesome!

As I do my little happy dance, here’s a huge, big, fat thank you to two of my most favourite Daddy Bloggers: Eric aka Stomper Dad over at All’s in A Dad’s Work and Ah Dad over at Ah Dad who needs the funnies because his kids are now teenagers for the Blogger Recognition Awards. If you are not following these two dads yet, you really, really, really should!

The Rules

  • Thank the person who nominated you and give a link to their blog. Done
  • Display the award on your post and write about it. Done
  • Give a brief history on your blog itself. See below
  • Offer a piece of advice to new and upcoming bloggers. See below below
  • Select 10 other bloggers you wish to nominate. See all the way below

A Brief History on Grubbs ‘n Critters

If you glance to my sidebar, you’d notice that my archives started way back in 2008. Blogger was my platform of choice and the only reason I started the blog in the first place was to update my family and friends when I moved away from Singapore. I could not be arsed to email or call them frequently to repeat myself 100x to different people.

Part of me did not really want to go “public” as I did not think that I am good enough to be “out there”. My blog on Blogger was an island for a very long time and besides, I never really thought that anyone would be bothered with my nonsensical ramblings and rants. I continued writing for a REALLY small circle of the audience and I was OK with it.

In 2013, I started on a thought piece. It led me to reflect and ponder on reflecting and pondering, then decided to switch over to WordPress and straight to self-hosting without any clue as to what I’d be getting myself into. I figured that apart from having to fork out a small investment, I got nothing to lose: I don’t have to worry about losing my contents on a free platform should free changes to something else, and I can use it for the kids’ unfortunate inheritance – both Silver Bullet and me have got no real money for them when we die.

Grubbs ‘n Critters was born and hosted in a new home that you see today on 3rd October 2013. The problem was I did not know exactly where to start to get followers and herein lies the fault: I did not spend the time to connect with other bloggers because I just didn’t know how; and feeling too conscious that I’d make a fool out of myself. It wasn’t until 2014 that I decided to grow some balls to get myself out there.

It has been a slow ride on a self-hosted site, but I’m not in a hurry to chase numbers. What I’m loving about this journey are the blogging friends I have made, the amazing blogging community and all the things I have learnt from reading the blogs I have followed.  I haven’t looked back since.

My attempt on tips to new and upcoming bloggers

After 8 years of blogging and still having less than 200 followers to-date AND…I’m supposed to be giving advice? Oh God. Bwahahahhahahhaaa. Am I even qualified to give one? Bwahahhahahahahhaa

So you already know that I’m no expert in this domain and if you’d still want to hear some of my tips, here’s my take:

Just do it. Choose WordPress. Write, even if you think it’s shit. Be authentic. Then read and comment on other blogs. Leave your footprints and be nice. Share, pin, tweet and re-tweet  – karma is a big thing in the blogging world. Always reply to those who comment on your blog. Participate in WordPress Blogging University as it is a great way to start building your community and rub shoulders with other bloggers. Take part in linkies and blogging challenges.  Always credit your sources. Responding to awards is awesome, too!

I also learnt 7 other valuable somethings prior to the birth of Grubbs ‘n Critters when  I decided to switch platform and go self-hosted. It was the jolt I needed to propel through and I wrote in my Reflect and Ponder on Reflecting and Pondering post.

And if you are self-hosted, imbedding follow and social buttons on your site is a must. But! Whatever you do, please do not use Discuz for your comment box. God. Please.just.don’t.

My nomination

There is no obligation to respond/accept as always. If you choose not to, then consider this as a shout-out from this end of the world because I do really, really like your blog. Like the award itself says, “Thank you for being a part of the blogosphere!”

  1. Dream Big, Dream Often
  2. Kids, Crumbs and Crackers
  3. Estelea’s Blog
  4. All That’s Jas
  5. Eat, Play, Clove
  6. Revisions of Grandeur
  7. My Kid Doesn’t Poop Rainbow
  8. A Stranger in a Strange Mind
  9. Sane Teachers
  10. That’s What Anxious Mom Says

That done,  I hope this would make your day as it did mine.

Subsequently, I  did mention three nominations and this other one requires a little bit more research and thinker as far as the rules go.

Stay tuned!
