Squirt turned 4

Category: Critter Stories

To my dearest little dare-devil,

It’s been exactly one month since you turned 4. I remember how, with the encouragement and reminder from your sister, you couldn’t wait to be 4 a week prior to your birthday.

You woke up every morning with such big smiles on your face, announcing your would-be birthday celebration. And each day you did that, you didn’t know that you were reminding me to write you a letter, on your birthday, for every single birthday that you’ll have.

It was a promise I made a few years back.

I was gutted I couldn’t fulfil it then because the last 2 months had been pretty crazy. In fact, we almost did not celebrate your birthday for many reasons:

  • we had just moved to a new country
  • we have only just started to live in our new home
  • I had an eye infection
  • you didn’t have any friends yet for us to invite
  • I couldn’t bake you the cake you asked for
  • we couldn’t find a nice cupcake which we would always have as our family tradition for birthdays
  • and most importantly, it so happened that 1st June was the day your Papa started his new job.

In short, your birthday was going to be a bummer.

But we could not let that happen; especially not when you have been pretty crazy-excited about it. Not having one would not be fair.

So we haphazardly decided on a small family celebration with a simple cake, a visit from your Oma and Opa but without Papa or your familiar Bangkok friends. So haphazard that we almost couldn’t get you a cake and we even forgot the candles! Still, you were nothing but a sport. You went along, blowing imaginary candles and had a blast stuffing your face with the cake and the chocolate pieces. It was a delight to watch you.

Squirt4

You made quite a big deal on turning 4. I find it hilarious (sometimes embarrassing) that you have no qualms telling anyone, everyone and strangers on the streets of your upcoming birthday and continued on to tell everyone that you are now 4 and a big boy. One time, you approached a much older boy in front of me at the cashier in a supermarket.

Being the friendly chap that you always are, you said hi, told him your name and then continue to tell, wait…announce to him that you are Superman. Loudly.

Oh boy! If only you understood the expression on his face! I had to laugh at your antics and cheek-palm myself while you were at it as the boy was trying to make sense of you. At least he said hi back and tell you his name.

Sometimes, I just wish being the friendliest, happy-go-lucky, smiley and mild personality guy would be the only thing you do. You have given us several heart attacks with your daredevil acts. Perhaps it’s your age in which you harbour no sense of real danger or fear, but if we look at other kids your age, most tend to be cautious before they attempt something.

With you, you just go!

You did that recently with your first cycling attempt without side wheels. You went on the first trial and you go. You were able to get your balance and cycle in one minute! We were so proud of you.

But you also would “just go” with other things.

You are a water rat with a penchant for big slides, a climbing monkey with a curiosity for heights, a socket poker with an obsession for buttons/switches, a jumper, a runner, a slider, a smasher into people and/or things with such great speed that sometimes, it is impossible to stop you in time before you hurt yourself.

People tell me that it’s because you are a boy and those traits are atypical. Much like your obsessions with cars, wheels, heavy machinery and recently “flying bicycles that do loops”. I’m sure it is atypical and it’s a good thing to live your life without fear. I’ve seen how your eyes just light up when you get the adrenaline rush during a supervised session.

You love that ticklish feeling in your stomach you said. I hate the rush of blood in my heart.

But for now, bear with me. I think I’ll have to nag a while more to continue educating you on the fine line between thrill and down-right dangerous. Like it is absolutely OK to jump feet-first into a pool (supervised for now) but it is an absolute no-no to be jumping in the bathtub or the toilet like you would jump into the pool!

Not that I enjoy nagging, neither am I one to bubble –wrap you, nor it is my intention to fill you with fears because I completely condone you doing all the boys’ stuff. But! With you, there had been too many near-misses cases of when accidental accidents from your fearless nature would spell disaster.

So, I’ll continue to repeat myself with this: I’d rather you cry than us crying. Besides, you are only 4. You have a whole life ahead of you. I know, I know… it’s complicated, and someday you will understand.

Other than that, we love your contagious smiles, your easy-going nature, your adorable demeanour and your love for snuggles, kisses and hugs. Your sensitivity to other people’s feelings is out of this world. With so much compassion in such a tiny body, I’m looking forward to seeing you grow into a fine gentleman.

Bedtime is preferably still at 6.30 pm, but we can stretch it to no later than 7.30 pm. Sometimes. Not every day.

Happy belated birthday my dear, darling Squirt. You really have been a joy to hang out with. I promise you that this year will be yet another exciting year to add more amazing years to your life.

And you know what? It started with you being the first in the family to have the inaugural birthday celebration in a whole new different continent and in our new home. That, my boy, was pretty exciting!

With much love,

Your Mama

That Damn Cat!

Category: Cats

If you look at the pictures below, you’d think he is one hell of a lovely and affectionate cat, right?

You are not wrong. Donut is very lovely and affectionate. He is an American Shorthair, about 8 years old and possesses a very mild temperament. He loves to snuggle when the humans are asleep and when he sleeps, he actually snores!

He purrs a lot too but can be just a little bit of a closet bully to the other 2 cats. He is quite cute I must say. Would you like to adopt the bugger?

He is Silver Bullet’s cat, but as I happened to be his chosen human, I’ll vouch for his fantastic personality and would not have the heart to give him away.  Except that until about 2 weeks ago, I was so ready to give him up.

That was how mad I was with him after discovering (at around midnight!) that he had peed on and all over my laptop bag.

Not only did my bag stunk of cat’s urine, all the contents in it were bathed in pee-perfume! My stack of business cards in it was damaged, as did some of my office stationery and notebooks which I had to discard. I have not checked the condition of my USBs yet but they were pretty wet and stinky when I took them out.

Most importantly, my entire pouch of go-to medication containing several prescribed-only stash left from Bangkok was ruined. I had to throw them away and I do not have any spares.

Fuming I was. *Grunt* Especially since I think I have been reasonable enough to let him get away with the occasional crapping on our bed and his peeing spree on all the new kitchen rugs, doormats and bathroom mats. Use the litter box, dammit! That’s what they are for – not on our bed, not on the rugs, not on the mats and certainly not my laptop bag. Those are not for crapping or peeing.

Thankfully, my laptop itself was not in there or I think I would have thrown that cat out of the house and into the streets that very night. Oh, trust me! I was so, so close to doing that. I even had adamantly voice my sentiments to Silver Bullet, to which he pretended to ignore like I hadn’t say anything and let me cool off. *Grunt*

Donut seems to have sensed that I was pretty mad at him and for at least a day after that, he did not show himself up to me. Then slowly, he crept back in…purring and doing all the stuff cats do, to get the affection he thinks he deserves.

We have since made peace but Silver Bullet has been given an ultimatum to the fate of this cat of his the next time he pees on my personal belonging.

I hope Silver Bullet is right when he said that Donut would only ever find a spot outside the litterbox if he finds his litter a tad dirty. He defended the cat, vouching that the bugger usually does his business in there if it is clean enough for him.

A tad dirty, says he. Clean enough, says he. Bloody hell. It’s not like we don’t clean up on a daily basis. What a cat!

My guess is, the one who has the litter cleaning duty twice a day (at least!) would be Silver Bullet from now on. Donut is, after all, HIS cat. He was the one who chose the bugger amongst the many once upon a time.

The real question is:  Can I even bring myself to give him up? Would I really do that? I think I can and I would.  But I do kinda like the bugger a lot actually.  It’s just his occasional peeing everywhere habits that I cannot stand.

Urggh. What do I do?! What would you do?!

The Happiness Tag

Category: Blogging

Do you remember a sitcom back in the 1970s – 1980s called Happy Days? Actually,  I could only recall it vaguely but I do remember the theme song very well:

Sunday, Monday, Happy Days

Tuesday, Wednesday, Happy Days

Thursday, Friday Happy Days

The weekend comes, my cycle hums

Ready to race to youuuu

These days are ours…Happy and free..oh Happy Days.

These days are ours…Happy and free…”

That was the song that first played in my head when I learnt that one of my favourite Daddy Bloggers,  Eric aka Stomper Dad of All in Dad’s Work has tagged me as one of the 5 bloggers who has made him very happy. Happy days, indeed! What a divine compliment to say to another blogger and for that,  a huge thank you to Eric for such kind words.

Here are the rules. List:

  • Five things that make you happy.
  • Five songs that make you happy.
  • Five bloggers that make you happy and notify them of the nomination.

The five things that make me happy:

FotorCreatedfam

1. Spending quality family time without the distractions of everyday mundanes of chores, errands and work-related obligations. Must add coffee to the equation.

2. Makes me extra happy when the kids behave, listen and eat well as they rumble around with their relentless explosion of energy and seeing their faces light up with laughter over the silliest things. Must add coffee to the equation. Strong.

3. Food and food and creating magic in the kitchen to feed the family (and self of course). This is the only time when coffee takes a back-seat

4. Seeing them devouring the food that I have made, then asking for more or a repeat appearance for the next time, especially when I least expected that they remembered the last time I made!  After-dinner coffee would be lovely, thank you.

5. Spud and Squirt can officially cycle on their bicycles now! Spud’s doing absolutely great on her bike and she’s riding it like she’s been doing it all her life. With Squirt, he managed to get it for the first time he was let go. All within the first minute and off he went. Just like that without side-wheels, much the surprise of his Papa!

Two days later, he is able to get started on his own. He has been riding around (almost) like a pro now and telling me that when he’s a bit older, he wants to “fly with the bike” (hmmm…I absolutely know what he means. Let’s just say I’m willing to keep an open mind).

I guess when it comes to riding, our job is done! Yippeeee.  Gonna go get coffee now!

The five songs that make me happy:

  1. Happy –  Pharrel Williams
  2. Sway – Michael Buble
  3. Better Together –  Jack Johnson
  4. The Middle – Jimmy Eat World
  5. Bow Down Mister – Boy George

The five bloggers that make me happy:

  1. Eat, Play and Clove
  2. All That’s Jas
  3. A Momma’s View
  4. Ah-Dad
  5. Dream Big Dream Often

2 of the bloggers above have already been tagged by Eric (and possibly a hundred others too) and I’m compelled to include them on my list given that they are also one of my regular reads. I have absolutely enjoyed their writing (which makes me happy).

As for Danny, I know he doesn’t usually do things like this (he may also have been tagged by a thousand others  as well) but he’s definitely is on my list for being an awesome and kind blogger. Plus, he recently asked the question if money would make people happy with  lots of discussions going on about this. I thought it’s apt!

Don’t even question Jas and Gen as they both are my food inspiration de-facto and pushes me beyond happy with their will to indulge me.

Happiness all around and ready to race happy to you!
