City of Lights

Category: Travels

The lights burning bright is a typical postcard backdrop of the scenery in Singapore’s night sky. So illuminatingly bright and vibrant that I just had to take a shot of my immediate surrounding just as I was walking by.

It is not a sight I am not familiar with; but rather it reminded me of how much the landscape has changed since the last time I was back in Singapore. I don’t remember Fullerton Hotel being so brightly lit, and the last time I stepped foot along Esplanade, the idea of Marina Bay Sands was probably not even conjured up yet.

And that was ages ago. That second picture was still a piece of empty, reclaimed land then. How things have changed!

The last time I was at the Esplanade, it was an evening out with my best-friend. We met after work, had dinner at Thai Express and then we chatted over  coffee. We were discussing life. We were (and still are) each other’s sounding board, and I remember clearly that it was also the time when I had first shared with her on my possible move to Bangkok. It was a brutally long discussion of worries, contemplation, uncertainties, exploration and opportunities. The conversation was  deep. The choice of Thai Express was sheer coincidence, and did not have anything to do with the conversation about Thailand. Funny that!

That picturesque backdrop  triggered a memory that still lingers in my mind like it was yesterday. The place may have changed, yet that sense of warmth, support and encouragement from that moment of our long, heart-felt, honest chats still stayed within. Moments like that makes me smile. This city of light have blessed me with a true, life-long friend.

So Singapore

Category: Food

Nothing screams nostalgically “So Singapore” than being re-acquainted with some of the few familiar comfort find which I love:

1. A bowl of super savoury Mee Rebus for lunch

2. Freshly grilled otak-otak (grilled fish cake made of ground fish meat mixed spices) for snacks

3. Coffee served in plastic bag from a neighbourhood coffeeshop – very  old-skool!

These have been the little familiarity of comfort I grew up with. They have been the few I remember best about Singapore –  the variety of simple, yet delicious food. I am actually really surprised that the coffee shops still serve hot drinks in plastic bags! That was an awesome find.

That has been the Singapore I have always loved. It’s amazing how simple finds like that make me so happy.

Three too many

When is three too many?

I guess for this person sitting next to me on the plane, one can never have too many smart phones.  I’m sure each of the phones function differently and each one is being  used for different purposes. Besides,  they are not too cumbersome at all to be carried around all the time.

I just don’t think I can ever understand that. Just sayin’.
