One Yellow Submarine Too Many

Category: Critter Stories

Spud may just have been a 3-year old child, and boy! has she already understand the sophistication of music and able to form an opinion to a music which she likes! (or not!)

These days, Spud has been requesting for music play from the Beatles. She cannot get enough of Yellow Submarine and Good Day Sunshine asking us to repeat the songs over and over and over again when we are in the car, to the point that I think she’s obsessed with them.

I am not sure where the obsession of Yellow Submarine came from, but I have been wondering if my humming Yellow Submarine to her day-in-day-out when she was a baby for months on end has been flicked away at the back of her mind all this while, and is finally starting to show. With a vengeance.

That being said, I guess I only have myself to blame. But, there isn’t an inch of regret as there could be worse music out there, but I am glad that she has been able to show some appreciation of good music from the past and way, way, way past her era.

I think she would probably recall this time with much fondness when she hits her twenties, and probably, just like her dad, she’ll grow up with an old soul for music.

Time for some good old Pearl Jam, Green Day, Muse and Super Tramp, I’d say!

Hailstorm in Loei

Category: Weather

A couple of days ago, a massive hailstorm hit Loei and destroyed more than 500 houses, car and properties. Mother Nature seems to be acting up. Article can be found here.

The pictures that have been circulating around have been pretty surreal, and made it seem as if it has been snowing in the Northeastern part of Thailand.

I have never been to Loei, but colleagues have told me that Loei is beautiful and serene. In fact, its temperature is almost always comfortably cool. It is also one of the fewer places in Thailand which gets decidedly cold during the cool season as temperatures could plummet to zero degree celsius! I would love to make it there some day

Bangkok in the meantime, is going into the really hot and humid season. The heat is getting a little bit too warm for my liking. This is my least favourite time of the year.  Time to plan for that holiday out of Thailand.

Just because

Category: Travels

Walking out of one of the duty-free shops at Suvarnabhum airport as I hurriedly made my way to the boarding gate the other day, I saw, from the corner of my eye, a man fumbling about his stuff in a rather clumsy manner. People were walking past him, and those closer to where he stood as he tried to retrieve his belongings were oblivious to his predicament.

From where I was at less than 2 arms’ length away, I noticed that his luggage bag had stumbled over while he was trying his darnest to pick his jacket which he had dropped on the floor.  Without thinking, I quickly strode up to him, picked the handle of his luggage for him and handed it back to him.

What surprised me (in a good way) was the expression on his face. His eyes glittered and his face lighted up. And, looking like as if he was in shock that someone actually stopped to help, he thanked me like I just saved his life. While I didn’t think that what I did deserve any standing ovation, I was humbled that my seeminglytrivial action made such an impression on him. His face said it all. He was smiling and appreciative. He has a look of being genuinely shocked.

In turn, I felt good. It felt really fulfilling to be able to put a big smile on somebody’s face from such a small, almost insignificant gesture. I think it made MY day more than I made his.  It was completely unexpected.
