Black Ankle Strap Shoes

Category: Footwear

The open black ankle strap shoes has recently made its way to my mostly-wedged shoe collection – albeit by accident.

You see, one of the worst and most inconvenient thing to happen to you was when you realised that:

  • you are overseas
  • you knew full-well in advance that you would be attending a wedding and therefore would need some proper shoes to go with a dress
  • you packed a pair of shoes you thought was OK although  you had half-acknowledged that the  pair was actually useless but, you try to make do with it anyways
  • and 2 days before the wedding you realised that you would need a whole brand new pair of dress shoes altogether because the shoes you brought with you were all utterly useless!

That was my predicament with shoes when we were back in Holland 2 months ago.

A day prior to the wedding, we went from town to town to look for one simple black pair of shoes which I like. After 3 hours of going from shop to shop in 3 different towns (I haven’t discovered Harlem yet!), I finally found one from Schuz by Schmit which I could live with.

The first time I wore it for the wedding though, little did I know that we had to take group pictures with the bride and groom while standing on a soft, really muddy patch of grass! Not a very pleasant experience for a brand new pair of swanky shoes and I have to say that getting grass and mud out of the velvety suede leather was not a clean-up I was looking forward to!

It is not the kind of shoes I would want to wear everyday  and it looks much too delicate for a regular  work day.  It is, however, one of the more elegant pair I have ever owned and suitable to be worn with a dress for a formal or special occasions. It does look a little intimidating, but its velvety, leathery touch add some classiness to it. The inches on the heels may scream lots of pain, but I am genuinely surprise at how comfortable it is.

This pair certainly does not come cheap in my books, but the price I paid does make up for its quality.  It is also  easily one of the most comfortable pair of heels I have ever owned with a rating of 8 for sassiness.

Buttered Tomato Rice

Category: Grubbecipes

My recent creation of a meal repertoire for the family and toddler-friendly food is the tomato-based rice. I have adapted the recipe from various sources I found on the web,  gave it a little twist of my own by using several types of spices and thought that it is worth a repeat, especially so when my family loves it.

A staple that originates from the Indian kitchen, tomato rice is not only easy to prepare, but also makes for a healthy and fuss-free meal.

Ingredients
  1. 2-3 cupful of steam rice that is a little under-cooked
  2. 4-6 medium sized shallots
  3. 1 piece garlic
  4. 1 cm piece of ginger
  5. 3 tablespoon of butter (increase quantity if you prefer it to taste more buttery)
  6. 2 fresh tomatoes
  7. 3 cloves
  8. 2 cardamoms
  9. 1 bay leaf
  10. 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  11. 1/2 teaspoon tumeric powder
  12. salt to taste
  13. Fried shallots as garnish
Instructions
  1. Blend ginger, shallots , garlic and tomatoes together – set aside
  2. Heat up butter till it turns a little brown
  3. Saute cardamoms , bay leaf , cloves and fennel in the butter till it gives out a little fragrance
  4. Add in the blended ingredients and followed by the powdered tumeric. Fry them for about 5-10 minutes or when it gets less watery
  5. Add in the slightly under-cooked steam rice and mix well
  6. Season with salt and fry it all till the rice is cooked
  7. When ready, garnish with fried shallots which also serves as taste enhancement.
Notes
  1. Guaranteed to be yummilicious that would motivate second-helpings. Feel free to serve with chicken soup and egg on the side.

Eavesdropping Spud

One Sunday afternoon, as we lounged around at home with no imminent plans for the afternoon, the following conversation took place:

Spud: Mama, can I have chocolate?

Me: Ask Papa

Spud (pondering): Papa says to ask you

Me: OK. You get chocolate but you have to nap first.

Spud: HUH??

Me: Uh-huh. You heard me. Nap first, then you get chocolate. (I gave her a big mother of grin)

Spud: Nap? (Pause) It’s OK. I think I will have it later. After dinner, OK Mama.

Me: OK (I quickly turned around to avoid her seeing me smirk!)

It has been ages since Spud dropped her nap and that was my best attempt to convince her to get some afternoon shut-eye. I knew full well my trick would not work, but I was hoping there could be a chance it might. She obviously would have none of the nap crap and her willingness to delay her chocolate consumption spoke volumes about her liking for naps.

Cheeky little imp! She’s learning to negotiate her way, alright. And I’m learning to “forget” about giving her chocolates after dinner. *GRIN*
