#Writing 101: To Whom It May Concern

Today’s Prompt: Pick up the nearest book and flip to page 29. What’s the first word that jumps off the page? Use this word as your springboard for inspiration. Write the post in the form of a letter.

Dear uitgeblazen,

In English, you are being translated as “has been blown out”. It could be in the context of blowing out a candle (or fire) or blowing out your last breath when you die. Basically, it’s blowing air out of your lungs, but it does not represent a sigh.

Now, because you have “ge” in that word, it means that all that blowing happened in the past. Otherwise, you could appear in the form of uitblazen or opblazen or if used in a sentence, you completely transform yourself to something else in the way you are being used with a different spelling altogether: Ik (meaning I) blaas uit and in another form, Ik blaas het kaarsje uit (I blow the candle out).

That’s because you are considered as a “separable word”, which means 2 words put together that can be separated depending on the context you are being used. Of course, the form and spelling would change again if you are being used with personal pronouns as in Ik (I), Jij (You), Wij (We), Hij (He) or Zij (She).

You are one horrible Dutch word, you; along with your other crazy cohorts like afwassen (washing dishes), uitdraaien (turn off the gas or another word use for printing), opzetten (put something on top of something else or turn on them music but NOT for TV)…in which you would use aanzetten (to turn something on like the TV) to name the crazy few.

In any other circumstance, I would probably pick up an English book – but because I am currently now in Holland and the nearest book I could find was a Dutch book, you somehow stood out amongst the rest of the complicated Dutch language on page 29.

Uitgeblazen, you just blew my head off. Just when I thought I “get it”, you changed again and confused the hell out of my tiny, little, piddly brains. And apparently, I can’t use you if I want to construct a sentence that says something in the line of blowing my head off. Because, in the Dutch language, that’s just not the way it is being used.

Great. More rules. Which genius invented all the horrible, inconsistent rules in the language?

Thank you for the unnecessary confusion you have caused.  I look forward to all the other curve balls your friends have in store and making the mastery of your excellent, complicated language an almost impossible challenge to handle. You drive me crazy.

It’s a great idea of fun. No argument there. No. Really.

Fabulous Friday Flavour: Tumeric Fried Rice with Chicken Nibblets

There is absolutely nothing not to like about Fried Rice. It’s tasty, it’s yummy, it’s filling and oh-so-versatile!

Got left-over steamed rice you don’t want to throw away? Fried Rice. Got left-over chicken/beef that you don’t want to keep for another day? Fried Rice. Got some vegetables in the fridge that won’t last for the week? Fried.Bloody.Rice!

And I’m saying that with a term of endearment because it’s always one of my go-to dishes when I run out of ideas or time to cook or on slow days left with some left-overs that needed a  make-over. Of course, you can always make it fresh too and not wait for left-overs. You can’t quite screw up a fried rice in my opinion.

So here’s another of Grubbs ‘n Critters creation of Fried Rice using tumeric:

Tumeric Fried Rice with Chicken Nibblets

Print
Ingredients
  1. 2-3 cups of rice, boiled (make sure it is not too soggy)
  2. 1 big red onions, chopped
  3. 1 clove garlic, roughly cut
  4. 3-4 green chillies (optional)
  5. 2 potatoes, cubed small
  6. 5-8 strings of long green beans, cut
  7. 1/4 teaspoon tumeric powder
  8. 2 eggs
  9. 2 tbsp chives
  10. 1 tbsn parsely
  11. Salt & pepper
  12. 2 tbsp olive oil
  13. Optional: left-over cooked meat or fresh meat of your choice
Instructions
  1. Boil rice and set aside
  2. Blend-up onion, garlic, green chillies
  3. Peel and cut potatoes into small cubes. Put it in the microwave for 5-6 minutes (I do this to save time to soften the potatoes as they take a long time to cook). Set aside
  4. Heat up oil in a wok. When it is hot enough, add in the blended ingredients and fry for 4-5 minutes
  5. Add in tumeric and mix well. This will make the paste yellow.
  6. If you are using fresh meat, add them in. Otherwise, add in the potatoes and long beans. Mix well till potatoes are tender
  7. Add cooked meat if you are using cooked meat. Crack the eggs into the wok and let it sit for 5-10 seconds.
  8. Add in rice then stir it all up and mix well.
  9. Add in parsely, chives, salt and pepper to taste
  10. Fry for about 5-10 minutes and turn off the fire.

Top the fried rice with Fried Chicken Nibblets (you can buy this off the frozen section or make it yourself. Recipe here). Serve!

Viva la Holland!

Category: Travels

Fresh air. Nature and low lands. Deafening silence. Really good bread. Cold air.

And I’m looking forward to all that at this time of the year where a little family trip beckons for our annual pilgrimage back to the Netherlands. A little quite time, a time to reconnect, a time to reflect and providing the much-needed opportunity to re-focus and re-calibrate…away from the noise,  pollution and mayhem in Bangkok that muddle the mind and soul for a little while.

There are so many things I wanted to do  in the last few weeks – one being: trying to respond to a few award nominations which by now, had dated several months back and scheduling up some posts. But work and other commitments have kept me too busy and I could hardly keep up with myself.

Taking up #Writing 101 course was an ambitious attempt. I didn’t get to do all assignments and I think with this vacation, I’ll probably be falling quite far behind.

There’s something brewing with my Fabulous Friday Flavour feature  come 1st May, though! It is something I have been excited about post our #Blogging 201 as Gen and I buddy-up to come up with a recipe based on a theme one of us has chosen for the month.

We will then post up the recipe each of us attempted on our respective blogs – without knowing what the other person comes up with based on the agreed theme! Gen has the honour to kick off with a theme of her choice and I’ve got something in my head – although it is something I have not attempted before! Watch out for it. (No turning back now, Gen!) 😀

I’m not too thrilled with the lack of internet connection for at least a week when we get to Holland, because we’ll be out in the woods; which means I’ll be having some withdrawals from blogging! But I guess a little break and some digital detox could do me some good. (Seriously trying to convince myself here!)

Till then…
