Fabulous Friday Flavours: Home-made Baked Fish Fingers
For the love of fish, why buy processed, frozen food when you can substitute that with something which you can easily make on your own? Take the more common ones like Fish Fingers for instance, they can be easily replicated in your own kitchen without much fuss.
Fish is one of my favorite – it’s a shame that I don’t cook them (or other seafood) nearly often enough because those are just the stuff Silver Bullet doesn’t eat. But just because he doesn’t eat it, doesn’t mean that our kids should not be eating them too! I won’t have that, and so I do make a conscious effort on my part to expose them to fish and seafood since the little critters started on their first solid food. I think it’s necessary!
Thankfully, Spud and Squirt share my liking for fish. Fish fingers are one of their favourites, too!
These fish fingers are baked, not deep-fried. And only fresh fish will do!

- 1 piece of fresh halibut, deboned
- 2 cups of breadcrumbs
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 2 tspn dried basil
- 2 tspn dried parsely
- 1 tspn oregano
- salt & pepper to taste
- Set oven to about 170 °C
- Mix all the dried herb with the breadcrumbs. Season with salt and pepper
- In a separate bowl, beat the eggs
- Cut the fish to the size you want. Dip in egg then breadcrumbs, then egg and breadcrumbs again. Line then up in a baking tray
- Repeat this process till all the fish are used up
- Put them in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes or until they turn golden brown
- Serve with mustard sauce
- You can use any type of white fish and those with a firmer texture like halibut would work well.

This is such a great recipe and soooo much better than using the frozen crap. I love that it’s baked, not fried. Very cool!
Thanks, Gen! Dumping them in the oven is so much easier too. You just leave them to bake and do other things. Unlike frying, requiring close supervision and having to stand up. So there’s an element of being lazy there, too! 🙂
We enjoy baked fish from time to time but I hadn’t considered battering them like the frozen one’s! Thanks for the aha moment!! I know what we’re having very soon. Thank you for sharing at Merry Monday!
Glad it have you an AHA moment! Thanks for stopping, Shirley! 🙂
