Sunday Humour: Fluent Shit

Category: Entertainment

Without thinking very hard, I do not have enough fingers to count them:

There seem to be quite many of them around. They come in impressive numbers! I do it too sometimes; only because the work that I do calls for it. It’s called parenting to little shit-stirrers.  It’s not all bad, is it?

How many others do you know who shit-speak fluently? What fluent shit do you speak yourself?

Here’s to yet another week, hopefully devoid of shit-stirrers!

Friday Flavour: Ayam Masak Merah

Last Sunday, Muslims around the world celebrated the first day of Syawal, otherwise commonly known as Eid which marked the end of Ramadhan.

Like last year, we couldn’t make it back for the second year running as it would cost us way too much to afford a flight back to Asia. The long haul travels would have to wait; which means another year of missing my mom’s home-cooked food and feasting away all the good food that would be served before us.

So. Bummer that we could not go to the food. But I certainly could make magic by making my mom’s food come to us: I decided to fill the house with the aroma of freshly made Ayam Masak Merah and let it bubble away on my stove:

From my kitchen

It may sound like a mouthful, but Ayam Masak Merah simply means Chicken (ayam) Cooked (masak) Red (Merah). Literally translating that sounds funny so we usually call it Chicken Cooked in Red Sauce. It’s very aromatic and served with saffron rice during festivities.

Typically Asian-Singaporean-Malaysian-Indonesian, this is one dish where it can get very addictive. Took me years of practice to perfect this.
Like any mother’s daughter, I am saying that only my mom can make this the best!

Ingredients
  1. 8 chicken pieces
  2. 1 tbsp turmeric powder
  3. Pinch of salt
For the sauce (to blend)
  1. 2 cloves garlic
  2. 15 pieces dried chillies, cut slantwise and soaked in hot water for 5 minutes
  3. 2 inch ginger, peeled
  4. 1 inch fresh tumeric, peeled
  5. 2 big onions, roughly cut for blending
  6. 2 tbsp cumin seeds
  7. 1 tbsp coriander powder
  8. 3 stalks lemongrass
Others
  1. 2 big onions, sliced thin
  2. 5 cloves
  3. 1 star anise
  4. Half cinnamon stick
  5. 140g tomato puree (or 2 cans of a small puree)
  6. 2 ladles of evaporated milk
  7. Half a lemon
  8. Half tspn salt
  9. 3-4 pieces kaffir lime leaves, crushed
  10. Shallots and spring onions for garnish
Instructions
  1. Blitz all the ingredients for the sauce. Set aside.
  2. Rinse chicken. Rub them with turmeric powder and salt then fry them all till half cooked. Drain oil and set aside.
  3. Heat up oil. When it is hot enough, saute sliced onions with the spices (cloves, anise, cinnamon) for about 3-5 minutes till the onions turn translucent
  4. Add in the blended ingredients. Stir well and cook for about 10 minutes.
  5. Add in tomato puree, evaporated milk, squeeze half a lime and salt to taste
  6. Add the half-cooked chicken and mix well.
  7. Toss crushed kaffir lime leaves and mix again. Cook for about 20 minutes, bring to boil and make sure the chicken is thoroughly cooked
  8. Top with fried shallots and spring onions
  9. Serve hot with saffron rice
Notes
  1. Feel free to adjust the number of chilli used to avoid spicyness, though it is a must to use dried chillies, not fresh ones.

The Words

Category: Entertainment

Haunting. Melancholic. Soulful.

The mesmerising combination of the melodiously dark lyrics sung by such a beautiful voice gives me goosebumps. It send shivers down my spine.

As I close my eyes, I feel like the music has taken me to a different dimension as every single notes of the tune permeates into my soul.

This is Soen. A Swedish progressive metal supergroup whose music has made its way into my heart and artfully took me back to my early days of delving into underground music of progressive, psychedelic and art rock during my teenage days.

I recommend you listen to this with eyes closed and mindfully lose yourself to take in the song, devoid of any distraction. Get ready to be hypnotised.

Shiver through the fever, silence of the trees
Chasing woes of my weary soul, blight of the leaves

Rest from your trouble, lay while you wait
Dream something beautiful
Fill these blank pages with rue, each one

Patient you stayed by my side for years
I know I owe you more than I have
Given the words that will make you leave
There’s nothing left here, no one to save

How we share this hopeless devotion
Passing the hours as if they were days
And I won’t breathe until it’s over
No turning back here, no final escape

Bide here for the closing, fearless by the sea
Time to let go of what always’ been there, peacefully

Struck by your silence, drenched in my doubt
Numb from the burning cold
Tear out the pages, change what I sad
Mend my wrong.

Patient you stayed by my side for years
I know I owe you more than I have
Given the words that will make you leave
There’s nothing left here, no one to save

How we share this hopeless devotion
Passing the hours as if they were days
And I won’t breathe until it’s over
No turning back here, no final escape
