A friend has inspired me with her creation of Otak-Otak (or Otah-Otah as some call it) Omelette not too long ago, and posted the following image on her FB status:
She has, obviously left me salivating and me cursing myself that I could never get a good, Singaporean-style Otak-Otak here in Bangkok – a type of snack I have always loved since I was a kid.
Now for those wondering what Otak-Otak is, it is a typical Singaporean-Malaysian-Indonesian street-side food made of fish and spices, wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over hot charcoal. The word otak is literally translated as brains in Malay – apparently derived from its squishy, soft appearance. It is also known as “Pepes” in Indonesia.
I have yet to try making Otak-Otak, and seeing the above picture just gave me a reason to want to tinker with making it. Otak-Otak Omelette is indeed a very clever creation, me-thinks!
